Generate a Certificate Signing Request (CSR) for an SSL Certificate from RapidSSL.com

Step 1: Generate a Private Key

  1. Launch the Key Generator application (located in the Tools & Examples > SSL Tools of theWebStar installation directory).
  2. Enter a password to protect your key. Do not forget this password - you will require the password later.
  3. Click the Create Key button to generate your private key file.
  4. Name the private key file and save it in the WebSTAR folder.
  5. Click OK when the key has been created.
  6. Make sure that the key file is in your WebSTAR folder.

Step 2: Create your Certificate Signing Request

  1. Your Certificate Signing Request must be correctly formatted. Closely follow the conventions outlined below.
    The following characters can not be accepted: < > ~ ! @ # $ % ^ * / \ ( ) ?.
  2. Launch the CSR Utility application (located in the Tools & Examples > SSL Tools of theWebStar installation directory).
  3. Enter your common name. This is either your domain name (e.g. yourdomain.com) or your fully qualified domain name (e.g. www.yourdomain.com, secure.yourdomain.com, etc). Make sure that you enter the exact common name for which you will use your certificate - once the certificate is issued it cannot be changed. Your host name should be the main A name entry for your machine on your DNS server.
  4. Enter the name of your organization in the Organization field.
  5. Enter the name of the department or other organization unit in the Org Unit field.
  6. Enter the name of the city or town in which your organization is located in the Locality field.
  7. Enter the name of the state or province in which the organization is located in the State/Province field.
  8. Enter the two-letter code for the country in which you are located in the Country Code field, e.g. United States is US. Note that United Kingdom should be GB and NOT UK
  9. Enter the email address of the site's Webmaster or administrator in the Email Address field.
  10. Enter the telephone and fax number of the organization.
  11. Click Choose and select the Private Key file you created in step 1.
  12. Enter the password assigned to your Private Key in step 1.
  13. Click the Create button to generate your encrypted Certificate request form.
  14. Quit the CSR Utility program.
  15. Go to www.RapidSSL.com and select your SSL certificate type. At the relevant point in the enrollment you will be asked for you CSR. Copy this from your local system clipboard and into the box provided.
