What is SSL?

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificates establish a secure connection between a browser and a server. SSL certificates encrypt communication, authenticate the organization’s identity and indicate the secure status of the website to visitors with https status and a padlock or other SSL verification in the address bar.

What is domain validation?

Domain validation is the process by which a Certificate Authority like GeoTrust verifies the legitimate domain name for a website. SSL certificates with DV tell your customers the website they’re visiting has been vetted and you have the right to control the web domain.

How do web site visitors know if a web site is using SSL?

Different browsers indicate SSL-secured sites using different symbols—often a padlock or some sort of security lock icon. A user can click on that symbol to see the details of the certificate and its issuing Certificate Authority (CA). Users will also see the secured web address protocol, https, in their address bar. If the browser cannot verify a current SSL certificate is in place, it will display a warning to the user.
